Tavern on the Green RIP

rainyday_clipartAt the stroke of midnight, Dec. 31, 2009, the Big Apple welcomed in the New Year, and lost a beloved friend.  Tavern on the Green, the iconic, fabulously decorated restaurant in Central Park, closed forever, because some mis-guided NYC bureaucrats downtown would not renew their lease.  More than 700,000 people a year ate, drank and partied at Tavern on the Green.  It’s where the annual NYC Marathon hosted its annual carbo-packing pasta dinner the night before the big event.   There will be an auction of TOG’s fabulous crystal, stained glass and equipment, and it will open under new management and a new name.

In the meantime,  you can celebrate this Big Apple legend with the Tavern on the Green cookbook, full of recipes and stories about such celebrities as Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Richard Burton who enjoyed TOG.  Tavern on the Green — you will be missed.  The Big Apple is not the same without you.
